Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed concerns about freedom of speech, saying he no longer feels safe under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
His remarks come ahead of the NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026, which the party says is aimed at defending Ghana’s democracy, constitutional governance, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of citizens.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, August 5, Miracles Aboagye said many Ghanaians are worried about the state of the country’s democratic space and fear they could face consequences for expressing their opinions on national issues.
According to him, his outspoken nature and active participation in public debate have left him feeling personally vulnerable, stressing that citizens in a democratic society should be able to express their views without fear of intimidation or reprisals.
“I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I have written to the Chief Justice. I personally don’t feel safe because I talk and I can’t stop talking. I love to talk, and I love to debate.
“I feel that my mouth will put me into trouble. That is how I feel, and it is not just me. Thousands of people joining the demonstration feel the same way. If there is one thing Ghana must protect, it is our free speech, our democracy, and our ability to express ourselves freely without fear of being targeted.”
The Bawumia spokesperson said the planned NPP protest seeks to draw national attention to what the party describes as growing concerns over democratic governance and the protection of constitutional rights.
He added that the “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration is intended to reinforce the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s democratic institutions, preserving freedom of expression, and ensuring that every citizen can participate in public discourse without fear.
The protest is expected to bring together party supporters and other participants who share concerns about the country’s democratic principles and constitutional freedoms.
