The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana has cautioned traders and the public against the use of unauthorised chemical substances to accelerate the ripening of plantain.
The warning follows the circulation of a video on social media alleging that a chemical substance was being used to speed up the ripening of plantain at the Madina Market in Accra.
FDA Investigates Plantain Ripening Allegation
In response to the social media claims, the FDA, working with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, has commenced investigations into the matter.
The authorities engaged traders at the market as part of efforts to establish the facts surrounding the allegation and determine whether the practice shown in the video actually occurred.
The FDA also spoke with the individual featured in the viral video to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of chemicals for plantain ripening.
FDA Reaffirms Commitment to Food Safety
The investigation forms part of the FDA’s mandate to protect public health and food safety in Ghana.
The Authority is expected to provide further information as investigations continue and has urged stakeholders within the food supply chain to comply with approved food safety standards.
Consumers are also encouraged to remain alert and rely on information from credible authorities regarding food safety concerns circulating on social media.
