The government has intensified efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Ghana as part of the ongoing Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (MMARP).

The second day of the programme included a visit to the Adansi North District Hospital in Fomena, a health facility financed and constructed under the previous administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.

MMARP Team Visits Adansi North District Hospital

During the visit, the team, led by Dr Abena Yawson, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, toured several critical departments, including the Labour Ward, Outpatient Department (OPD) and other units providing essential healthcare services.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for health officials to interact directly with patients and healthcare workers.

According to the team, the stories shared by patients and medical professionals highlighted the resilience, hope and determination of people seeking healthcare services.

The interactions reinforced the importance of ensuring that government healthcare policies and investments focus on improving the lives of patients and strengthening frontline health services.

Hospital Plans Dedicated Maternal and Fertility Centre

The Adansi North District Hospital is also exploring plans to establish a specialised facility dedicated to maternal health and fertility care.

The proposed facility is expected to provide specialised services and could eventually be developed into a centre of excellence for fertility treatment and maternal healthcare.

Such a facility could improve access to specialised reproductive health services and contribute to efforts to address maternal health challenges in the region.

Strengthening Maternal Healthcare in Ghana

Maternal mortality remains an important public health concern, making investments in antenatal care, skilled delivery services, emergency obstetric care and postnatal support essential.

Programmes such as MMARP are aimed at identifying challenges within the healthcare system and developing practical responses to prevent avoidable maternal deaths.

Improving hospital infrastructure, providing essential medical equipment and strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals are also critical to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Ashanti Regional Health Officials Join Visit

The delegation included Dr Fred Adomako-Boateng, Ashanti Regional Health Director, alongside other health officials and professionals involved in strengthening healthcare delivery.

Their participation underscored the importance of collaboration between the government, regional health authorities, hospitals and healthcare workers in addressing maternal health challenges.

Mahama’s Commitment to Reducing Maternal Deaths

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to reducing maternal mortality and improving healthcare delivery across Ghana.

The government’s maternal health agenda seeks to create a healthcare system where women have access to timely, affordable and quality medical care before, during and after childbirth.

The visit to Fomena forms part of broader efforts to ensure that investments in Ghana’s healthcare sector translate into better outcomes for mothers and newborns.

The ultimate objective is to build a Ghana where no woman loses her life while giving birth, while ensuring that healthcare facilities have the resources and capacity needed to provide safe maternal and reproductive healthcare.
