Concerned electricity consumers in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region are set to stage a peaceful demonstration on September 1, 2026, over what they describe as persistent Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) overbilling, estimated electricity bills and delays in repairing or replacing faulty meters.

The planned protest is aimed at drawing attention to alleged inaccurate electricity billing practices and the challenges customers face when attempting to resolve billing disputes and meter-related complaints with ECG.

Residents Raise Concerns Over High ECG Electricity Bills

The convener of the group, Edem Mensah Viglo, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that residents had endured what they described as excessive estimated electricity bills, unexplained charges and delays in addressing faulty meters.

According to Viglo, some customers are being issued electricity bills without actual meter readings, while others allegedly face significant overcharges despite repeated complaints to ECG.

He said the group is demanding that electricity bills should be calculated strictly from accurate meter readings and that customers who have been wrongly charged should receive appropriate adjustments to their accounts.

The demonstration is being held under the theme:

“Enough Is Enough! Stop the Over-Billing Now!”

The organisers are also calling for greater transparency, accountability and fairness in ECG’s electricity billing system, while urging the company to respect the rights of electricity consumers.

Demonstration Route Announced

According to the organisers, the demonstration will begin at Denu Junction. Participants will then proceed to the Ketu South Municipal Assembly before heading to the ECG office in Denu, where they intend to formally present their grievances to company officials.

Viglo alleged that high electricity bills have placed significant financial pressure on households and businesses in the municipality.

He further claimed that the alleged overbilling had contributed to the collapse of some small businesses and worsened unemployment in the area because many businesses and individuals could not afford the high ECG electricity charges.

Residents Cite Bills Running Into Thousands of Ghana Cedis

The organisers cited several cases in which customers allegedly received unusually high electricity bills.

Viglo claimed that some households continued to receive electricity bills even after being disconnected for several months. He also cited cases where homes with very few electrical appliances, including households reportedly using only a single light bulb, allegedly received bills ranging from GH¢2,000 to GH¢5,000.

He further alleged that some customers had accumulated electricity bills approaching GH¢20,000 within a few months.

The group said the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, ECG and other relevant authorities had previously been informed about the concerns, but residents believe sufficient action has not been taken.

Security Agencies Notified

The organisers said security agencies have been notified about the planned demonstration to ensure that the protest is conducted peacefully and that public order is maintained.

They have consequently appealed to residents, electricity consumers and other concerned citizens in Ketu South to participate peacefully.

The organisers said the demonstration goes beyond high electricity bills, describing it as a call for justice, consumer protection, accountability, transparency and respect for the rights and dignity of electricity customers.

Government Announces Investigation Into ECG Overbilling Claims

Meanwhile, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans for an independent investigation into complaints concerning alleged electricity overbilling and faulty ECG meters in some communities in the Volta Region, including Keta.

Dr Jinapor said the investigation would be conducted by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission following complaints from residents regarding the operations of Ghana’s electricity distributor.

The investigation is expected to provide further clarity on complaints surrounding estimated electricity bills, faulty meters, electricity overcharging and billing disputes in affected communities.

The development comes as concerns over ECG electricity billing and meter-related challenges continue to generate calls for greater accountability and improved customer service within Ghana’s energy sector.
