Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus provided an assist as Tottenham Hotspur finally scored their first Premier League goal of the 2026/27 season, but the London club suffered a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
The result means Tottenham are still searching for their first Premier League victory of the season after five matches, leaving manager Roberto De Zerbi’s side in 18th position with two points.
Mohammed Kudus Makes Impact for Tottenham
Kudus started the Premier League match on the substitutes’ bench before coming on at half-time, replacing Mateus Fernandes as De Zerbi sought to strengthen Tottenham’s attacking options.
The Ghana international appeared to have ended Tottenham’s goalless run in the 60th minute when he converted from close range following a cross from Andy Robertson.
However, the effort was ruled out after a VAR review, with Robertson judged to have been in an offside position during the build-up.
Kudus later played a decisive role in Tottenham’s first officially recognised Premier League goal of the campaign.
In the 86th minute, the former West Ham player produced a cut-back that found Conor Gallagher, who finished the move to give Tottenham their first league goal of the 2026/27 season.
Aston Villa Secure Premier League Victory
Aston Villa had already established a commanding advantage before Tottenham’s late response.
Johan Manzambi opened the scoring for Villa in first-half stoppage time before Nicolas Jackson doubled the visitors’ lead in the 67th minute.
Emiliano Buendía then extended Aston Villa’s advantage to 3-0 in the 80th minute, putting the visitors in a strong position to claim all three points.
Gallagher’s goal gave Tottenham hope of a late comeback, while Jan Paul van Hecke scored in the eighth minute of stoppage time to make it 3-2.
Despite the late pressure, Tottenham could not find an equaliser as Aston Villa held on for the victory.
Tottenham Remain Without a League Win
The defeat leaves Tottenham Hotspur without a Premier League win after five matches.
De Zerbi’s team now have just two points and remain in the relegation zone in 18th place, increasing the pressure on the club to improve its league form.
For Kudus, however, the assist represents a positive individual contribution as he prepares to join the Ghana Black Stars during the international break.
The Tottenham midfielder is expected to feature for Ghana in the upcoming AFCON qualifying matches and a friendly against Morocco, providing him with another opportunity to build momentum with the national team.
