At a church ceremony on Sunday, August 20, the outgoing moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Obiri Yeboah Mante, praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s religious tolerance and described him as a Muslim Christian.
Speaking at the Ramseyer congregation in Abetifi Kwahu at the 23rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s final session, Rev. Prof. Mante said Ghana is grateful to God for giving the country Vice President Bawumia.
Despite being a Muslim, he said that the Vice President has accepted religious diversity and is at ease attending Christian services.
In one of our events, he recalled, “I was standing behind Vice President Bawumia and, to my surprise, he sang every line of a hymn we were singing.
I asked him how he learned all of these things, and he said that when he was younger, he was a member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade. I’m not sure if he ultimately rose to the rank of officer, but I believe he is more than just a Muslim. Vice President Bawumia, in my opinion, is a Muslim Christian.
Numerous prominent figures from education, politics, traditional leaders, and Presbyterian clergy from around the continent attended the 23rd General Assembly’s final session.
Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was chosen as the next moderator of the church at this year’s Assembly.
