The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to improve on its performance in the 2024 general elections as the party intensifies efforts to reorganise its internal structures ahead of the 2028 elections.

The party’s Acting Director of Elections, Mahdi Jibril, says the ongoing internal electoral processes, including the forthcoming regional elections, form part of a broader strategy to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and increase its electoral support across Ghana.

According to him, the NDC is determined to expand its electoral gains rather than concentrate solely on maintaining constituencies where it already enjoys strong support. He explained that the party is working towards securing additional votes from every part of the country to improve its chances of winning the 2028 general elections.

“The focus is for us to win 2028 elections. And wherever the vote will come to make the winning possible, we work on it,” he stated.

Mr Jibril further emphasised that party unity, organisational development and improved electoral performance remain key priorities as the NDC prepares for the next general elections.

He noted that the party wants to strengthen cooperation among its regional structures while ensuring that its performance in 2028 surpasses the results achieved during the 2024 elections.

“We want to work for the unity of the party in the region, and then good performance, improve from what we did in 2024 to 2028 elections. That’s the priority of the party,” he added.

The Acting Director of Elections stressed that the NDC’s ambition is not simply to retain its existing electoral support but also to secure more votes to strengthen its position ahead of the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.

NDC Faces Petitions and Disputes After Constituency Elections

Meanwhile, the party’s internal reorganisation has encountered some challenges following petitions, disqualifications and appeals arising from its recently concluded constituency elections.

Mr Jibril disclosed that the NDC received 26 petitions and recorded approximately 22 disqualifications during the voting process. However, he indicated that some of the disqualification decisions were later overturned after affected candidates pursued appeals.

He explained that the party had addressed several of the complaints and was working to resolve outstanding electoral disputes, including positions involving tied results and other unresolved matters.

According to him, rerun elections are being organised in some constituencies, while negotiations are ongoing to settle disagreements over certain positions.

“After the elections, we have positions that are tied. We are resolving those ones. Reruns are ongoing. Some renegotiations are also ongoing. So that is what the party is doing,” he explained.

The NDC’s ongoing internal elections are expected to play an important role in strengthening party unity, improving grassroots mobilisation and preparing its leadership and supporters for the 2028 general elections.

With the party targeting an improved electoral performance, its ability to resolve internal disputes and maintain unity could be crucial to its campaign strategy ahead of the next national polls.
