Antigua and Barbuda has expressed interest in recruiting additional Ghanaian nurses following the positive contribution of the first batch of 120 healthcare professionals deployed from Ghana, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the Caribbean nation made the request during a bilateral meeting with its Foreign Affairs Minister, Everly Paul Chet Greene, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.

He disclosed that the initial group of 120 Ghanaian nurses had made a significant impact on the country’s healthcare delivery system, prompting authorities to seek more skilled medical professionals from Ghana.

The development represents a major step forward in Ghana’s international healthcare recruitment and labour mobility partnerships, particularly with countries in the Caribbean region.

In January 2026, Ghana deployed its first batch of 120 nurses to Antigua and Barbuda under a three-year employment agreement. The healthcare workers were recruited to support medical services and address staffing shortages within the country’s health sector.

The Ghana government says the overseas nursing deployment programme forms part of its broader strategy to create employment opportunities for qualified healthcare professionals while expanding Ghana’s participation in the global healthcare industry.

The growing demand for Ghanaian nurses abroad is also expected to strengthen bilateral relations, promote professional development and increase international employment opportunities for Ghana’s skilled workforce.

Antigua and Barbuda’s latest request highlights the growing recognition of Ghanaian healthcare professionals and could pave the way for further recruitment opportunities for nurses seeking employment outside the country.
