In the general elections of 2024, former minister of communications Ekow Spio-Garbrah has declared that he is prepared and eager to run as former president John Mahama’s running mate.
Mr. Mahama reacted in November of last year to requests that the Asunafo South MP Eric Opoku be given consideration as the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) running mate for the 2024 election.
Although he acknowledged the significance of the position, Mr. Mahama emphasized that the party had created processes for choosing the best candidate.
He informed the public that the procedure will start this year and advised them to remain calm as they awaited the Council of Elders, National executives, and Presidential candidate’s choice.
The former trade minister stated on TV3 that “it is a matter of Mahama’s choice” and that “I am also capable; I am also ready.”
At the Communications Ministry, Mr. Spio-Garbrah, a former subordinate of Mr. Mahama, declared: “If he chooses me, we will all hear about it.”
He continued, “I’m still in Ghana. I’ve made myself known and available to lead our party and to lead Ghana.”
When Mr. Mahama visited the Ahafo region recently, he informed the traditional leaders and their people, “What I will say is that, just like custom has it, our party also has processes to select candidates for various roles”.
“It is the presidential candidate, national executives, and council of elders who come together to select a running mate,” he told them. He added: “But that process will start next year, so, keep praying for such a time.”
Mr. Mahama selected Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, his former minister of education, as his running mate in the most recent general election in 2020.
