The Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) that were missing from the recent District Level Elections (DLE) held across the nation are putting the Electoral Commission (EC) under investigation.

The EC has directed its Regional Directors to send all BVDs used in the 2023 District Level Elections to the Head Office in response to the problem.

Memorandum dated March 7, 2024, issued to the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of Corporate Services, with a signature from Mr. Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, detailed the direction with the topic “Return of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).”

Lack of BVD is highlighted in the memo in multiple regions (Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Upper East, Savanna, Northern, North East, Western, and Volta).

In particular, each area has one excellent BVD, Greater Accra has one, Eastern has one, Western North has two, Western has five, Central has one, Volta has two, Upper East has three, Savanna has two, Northern has nine, and North East has two, for a total of twenty-eight.

The impacted regions have been given instructions by the Commission to arrange and send the unprocessed purchase vouchers back to the head office’s Procurement Inventory and Management Unit for additional handling.

However, the Electoral Commission has stated that it is actually five of its laptops that have been taken. In the meantime, the NDC has expressed worries about around seven EC Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) being stolen.
