In Darkokrom, a village in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region, a mining pit collapsed, killing two illegal miners and saving others.
On Thursday, the incident happened about 10:00 p.m.
When the pit collapsed, numerous people—including the deceased, named as Apim Larh, in his late 40s, and Simon, in his late 20s—were using an illicit mining method known as “Kolikoli.”
Witnesses stated that the pit they were working in eventually collapsed on them after losing stability, possibly as a result of heavy excavation activity.
Larh and Simon were discovered dead in the debris, despite the community’s quick response and the successful rescue of a few illegal miners.
The Ankaase Morgue received the bodies so they could be preserved and examined.
Deaths from the Galamsey pit have become the norm in recent years.
