Yesterday, the National Roads Authority bill was passed by the Ghanaian Parliament.
Following a motion made by Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister of Roads and Highways, during the National Roads Authority Bill’s third reading in the house, this occurred.
“The primary objective of this Bill is to establish the National Roads Authority, an autonomous body responsible for planning, developing, maintaining, and managing Ghana’s national road network,” the Minister stated.
“This new entity will streamline the management of Ghana’s national roads by bringing together the three key agencies currently under the Ministry, Ghana Highway Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, and the Department of Feeder Roads ], into a single authority.” Hon. Asenso-Boakye added
The National Roads Authority will be in charge of managing district and inter-district roads, collector roads, trunk roads, and arterial roads under the new system.
As you may remember, the National Roads Authority was established by the Cabinet last year to address a number of important issues facing the transportation industry, including poor maintenance, inconsistent standards, lack of coordination, and project delays.
The quality, safety, and sustainability of the road network are negatively impacted by these issues, which hinders social and economic advancement.
Thus, the creation of the National Roads Authority is essential to Ghana’s goal of having a well-designed, well-maintained, and secure road system.
