Two new instances of dengue fever have been reported, bringing the total to eleven, according to the Ghana Health Service’s Eastern Regional Health Directorate.

On July 14, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) declared that there was a clinical malaria outbreak, also referred to as dengue fever, in a few districts in the Eastern Region. The GHS reports that samples sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) resulted in the initial confirmation of nine cases.

Five districts have now been affected by the sickness, which was first identified in three districts and towns in the Eastern Region. Birim Central, Birim North, Akyemansa, Birim South, and Achiase are the districts that are impacted.

Dr. Winfred Ofosu, the regional director of health services, told reporters during a press conference on Monday afternoon in Koforidua, the regional capital, that there will probably be more instances.

The directorate is currently awaiting the results of an additional 57 samples that were sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, he continued.

“A total of 11 cases have been confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. The region is expecting feedback from 57 more samples that are being processed. The region is currently managing 103 suspected cases. Initially, it was nine cases, but further tests revealed two more positive cases,” he said.

In addition to urging those living in the impacted districts to visit the closest medical facilities in the event that they exhibit symptoms of dengue fever, Dr. Ofosu reassured the public that the Ghana Health Service is prepared to fight the illness.
