Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has received congratulations from former President John Mahama on her appointment as the seventh Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

The NDC flagbearer wrote on X that she was thrilled to see another notable woman leading the Commonwealth following Patricia Scotland.

He exhorted Ayorkor Botchwey to use her authority to make Ghana and Africa proud.

“Congratulations Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on your election as Secretary General of the Commonwealth, he wrote.

You will be joining a special group of diplomats to help make the Commonwealth and the world a better place.

I am particularly excited that after Patricia Scotland, we have another distinguished female at the head of the Commonwealth.

Make Ghana and Africa proud with your leadership of the 56-member Organisation.”

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey was just chosen to serve as the Commonwealth’s Secretary-General.

On October 25, 2024, at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the Minister was chosen by the Commonwealth Heads of Government.

She is the first person from Ghana to hold this important position.

In a succinct statement, Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey thanked the Commonwealth and Ghanaians for their faith in her.

She expressed her excitement about collaborating with every member state to create a more robust and resilient Commonwealth.
