The massive turnout at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign walk in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region’s capital, astounded John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the main opposition party.
With a sea of NDC colors and cries, thousands of supporters assembled at the Aboabo Post Office, marched through the main streets, and finished their walk at Kumasi Jubilee Park.
Speaking to the excited audience at Jubilee Park, Mr. Mahama said he was shocked by the number of people there.
“Am I dreaming? Are we in Kumasi? Are we in the Ashanti Region? Someone should wake me up; maybe I’m dreaming. That’s why Dr. Bawumia is having a sleepless night,” He said, to an applause from the audience.
Highlighting what he called the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) obsession with his image, the NDC flagbearer pointed out that they frequently focus on him instead of their own flagbearer.
The Ashanti Region, which has always been seen as the party’s bastion, was the target of his criticism of the NPP for not fulfilling their pledges.
According to Mr. Mahama, “the elephant will go back to the bush,” implying that a major political change in the area could result from discontent with the NPP’s performance.
