The Office of the President has given Ghanaian public senior high school heads permission to buy basic food supplies for their students for a two-week period, from January 20 to February 3, 2025.
In order to resolve issues with the feeding situation in public secondary institutions, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education issued this directive in a letter as a temporary solution.
Funds have been distributed to schools in order to support this project, taking into account the approved daily feeding rates and the number of students enrolled. The daily meal price for boarding students is GHS 7.50, while the daily meal price for day students is GHS 3.00.
In order to support kids throughout this time, school heads are encouraged to use these monies to purchase necessary food items that are available in their communities.
Heads of exclusively day schools must hire private caterers to serve hot meals to pupils at the authorized price. This system guarantees sufficient accommodations for all students during the two-week term, irrespective of their boarding status.
In carrying out this responsibility, regional directors are responsible for making sure that all heads of public senior high schools, senior high technical schools, and STEM institutions adhere to the applicable Public Procurement and Financial Management Regulations. Guidelines for public procurement have been made available to help schools follow the right procedures.
To ensure that this project is implemented smoothly, the Ministry of Education urges Heads of Schools to adhere strictly to these directives and recommendations.
This initiative is a component of the government’s continuous efforts to protect the welfare of students across the country and enhance circumstances in public secondary schools.
