Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, has stated that, despite previous claims indicating a mass deportation of 6,200 people under President Donald Trump, only 156 Ghanaians are currently in danger of being deported from the United States.

Ablakwa clarified during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 31 that official U.S. government correspondence shows a much smaller number of people who are in danger of deportation.

“There have been publications that about 6,200 Ghanaians will be affected by the mass deportation by the United States. But from the brief that has been shared with me from the officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they allay fears that the numbers are not that high and that currently, the official communication the ministry has received from Washington DC is 156, not 6,200, which face imminent deportation,” he said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively collaborating with U.S. authorities to safeguard the rights and dignity of impacted Ghanaians, Ablakwa assured the committee.

Ablakwa also out that the new 2025 immigration rules have strengthened deportation protocols and broadened eligibility requirements for removal, in keeping with current shifts in U.S. immigration policy under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Ghanaians and other foreign nationals will probably be impacted by these new regulations, but he informed the people that the government is keeping a careful eye on the situation and offering assistance to those who are impacted.
