Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has expressed worry about the substantial water loss in its distribution system, stating that only 48% of the water it produces makes it to the homes of its customers.
Problems like pipeline leaks, unauthorized connections, and inefficient distribution systems cause the remaining 52% to be lost.
Ghana Water Limited’s interim CEO, Adam Mutawakilu, spoke at a seminar in Accra about these urgent problems and clarified the key elements impeding the efficient supply of water to homes around the nation.
Mr. Mutawakilu claims that one of the company’s biggest problems is non-revenue water, which is defined as water that is produced but does not bring in money because of system failures.
According to him, Ghana Water Limited’s non-revenue water rate was a startling 52% as of the end of December 2024.
Accordingly, over half of the water that is cleaned and supplied does not reach users, resulting in waste, monetary losses, and insufficient supplies for numerous towns.
He also stated, “Furthermore, high levels of water loss due to leakage in pipes, illegal connections, and inefficient distribution systems continue to circumvent water loss before it even reaches consumers. As of the end of December 2024, non-revenue water was 52 percent. So that means the moment we produce water and dispatch it, only 48 percent gets to customers.”
