Forty of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) missing containers have been located and seized by national security agents.
In relation to the matter, an Indian national has been taken into custody.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the suspect says he bought the containers a year ago.
Now, investigators are trying to confirm his statements and find the people responsible for the purported sale.
The containers’ recovery represents a major advancement in the continuing investigation into the cause of their disappearance.
As security authorities step up their investigation, more arrests are anticipated as a result.
The loss of more than 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Tema Harbor will be the subject of a criminal investigation, according to John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transitions.
On Thursday, March 26, he announced this on Facebook and included information on an investigative report on the subject.
The last NPP administration disclosed during the transition process that roughly 3,000 ECG containers were being held at Tema Harbour because the business was unable to clear them, Mr. Jinapor said.
He was given a different estimate of 2,500 containers, which had accrued a demurrage fee of GHS 1,500,000,000, when he visited the port after taking office.
The Minister formed an investigating team to confirm the facts surrounding the containers because of the discrepancy in these figures.
The Minister characterized the results as extremely alarming and emphasized the necessity of responsibility and prompt response.
“The committee’s report, which was presented to me, confirmed that over 1,300 containers were indeed missing, contrary to the narrative given by the previous administration,” Mr. Jinapor said.
His declaration that “criminal investigations will be launched immediately, and the perpetrators will surely be prosecuted,” demonstrated the government’s resolve to deal with the problem.
