At the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the Greater Accra Region, an increasing number of dialysis patients are voicing their dissatisfaction and worries after being denied access to the main dialysis unit for almost a week because of a purported scarcity of essential supplies.

Due to the sudden disruption, many patients are rushing to private dialysis centers for life-saving treatment, frequently at exorbitant fees and with significant inconvenience.

The announcement is shocking to patients and caregivers, especially in light of the recent start of the MahamaCare program, which aims to solve long-standing deficiencies in Ghana’s healthcare system, including access to dialysis services.

“We are baffled. Just when we thought help had finally arrived with the MahamaCare programme, this happens,” said one affected patient, who spoke on condition of anonymity.”

“We don’t know if this is a case of sabotage or negligence, but whatever it is, it is putting lives at risk.”

The current administration’s introduction of MahamaCare, which aims to provide universal healthcare coverage, has been praised as a game-changer for people with chronic illnesses and other disadvantaged groups.

However, the current state of affairs at Korle-Bu has many wondering if certain people or organizations are sabotaging the program’s first attempts.

“This is not just an administrative failure, it’s a matter of life and death,” said another caregiver. “If anyone is deliberately sabotaging this programme, we won’t forgive them. This is a lifeline for so many.”

Although hospital officials have not yet issued an official comment, rumors indicate that the interruption is caused by a lack of necessary materials for dialysis treatments.

There are growing calls for immediate government action to look into the underlying reason of the supply shortage and guarantee that patients who depend on dialysis to survive receive treatment without interruption.

In order to ensure that MahamaCare fulfills its promise of providing everyone with fair and reliable access to healthcare, stakeholders are also calling for the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority to intervene and strengthen the program’s execution.
