New Specialist Training Program Enrols 500 Nurses

Almost 500 nurses have been enrolled into specialised programs through the Mahama Care Initiative, enhancing the nation’s capacity to provide cutting-edge medical treatment.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh hailed the move as a strategic attempt to provide the health system with essential skills in Emergency, Critical Care, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, and Oncology Nursing during a combined matriculation ceremony for the 2025–2026 academic year.

Expanded training is being used to implement the program in a few chosen universities.

He emphasised the students’ responsibility in expanding access to high-quality specialised care across the country and exhorted them to exhibit professionalism and competence.

Dr. Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Deputy Health Minister, highlighted the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease, which are caused by late identification and lifestyle factors.

To reduce the strain on critical care services, she advocated for improved primary healthcare systems, early screening, and increased prevention.

Mrs. Faustina Excel Adipa, principal of the School of Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing, urged the students to maintain their commitment and discipline, characterising the training as a long-term investment in bolstering Ghana’s healthcare system.
