The government announced a massive increase in mobile data for all networks.

A new price structure for mobile data bundles provided by the top telecom providers in the nation, MTN Ghana, AT Ghana (previously AirtelTigo), and Telecel Ghana, has been formally announced by Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.

These modifications, which are intended to increase customer openness and data value, will go into effect on July 1, 2025.

The CEOs of the leading telecom providers held strategic meetings before the news was made at a press conference held at the Ministry’s Complex in Accra.

While tackling important industry issues, the updated data bundle plans aim to improve value for Ghanaian customers.

New rates for data bundles for telecom providers in Ghana

  • MTN Ghana (Significant Market Power – SMP)
15% price increase on all current data bundle packages.
  • Restoration of the GH₵399 bundle, now offering 214 GB of data. Previously reduced to a GH₵350 bundle for 92.88 GB.
  • AT Ghana (AirtelTigo)
10% price hike across all data packages.
  • The GH₵400 bundle now increased from 195 GB to 236 GB of data.
  • Telecel Ghana
10% price increase on all existing data plans.
  • The GH₵400 bundle was revised from 90 GB to 250 GB of data.

The government’s larger plan to offer high-value data bundles while maintaining equitable pricing and service quality in Ghana’s telecom industry includes these changes.

Date of implementation and NCA oversight

On July 1, 2025, the new data bundle tariffs will go into effect. Enforcing compliance and carrying out quarterly billing integrity tests to guarantee accuracy and fairness have been assigned to the National Communications Authority (NCA). The minister emphasized that there will be severe consequences for noncompliance.

Sam George claims that the NCA’s most recent audit, conducted in Q3 2024, discovered:

  • All mobile data bundles purchased were correctly credited.
  • Non-expiry bundles retained their data throughout the validity period.
  • Unused data was properly rolled over upon renewal.
  • Quarterly audits beginning in Q3 2025 will also include tests on popular apps and websites to monitor data billing practices.

Plans to lower Ghana’s mobile data prices

The Ministry is working with the Ministry of Finance to simplify telecom taxes, which now account for roughly 39% of data pricing, in an effort to reduce mobile data rates in Ghana over the long run.

In order to lower operating expenses for service providers, talks are also being held with the Ministry of Energy and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission to implement a specialized telecom tariff, akin to that of the mining industry.
