The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), was visited by a TikTok team today to congratulate him on his appointment, talk about the Ministry’s top priorities, and look for ways to work together.

The team was led by Tokunbo Ibrahim, the Government Relations and Public Policy Lead for West Africa.

The newly launched STEM feed, a special feed devoted to instructive and motivational science, technology, engineering, and math videos, was one of the major changes from TikTok that Ms. Ibrahim also shared at the conference.

Along with reiterating TikTok’s commitment to community safety in Ghana, Ms. Ibrahim emphasized that the platform does not permit harmful disinformation and pledged to collaborate with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) on these initiatives.

Given your leadership in advancing digital inclusion, online safety, and youth empowerment, we are looking forward to seeing how the digital economy will continue to grow under your direction,” Ms. Ibrahim said.

The Minister greeted the team and emphasized the importance of determining age limits in order to help safeguard children online (Child Online Protection).

He asked TikTok to protect the integrity of its platform by implementing policies that safeguard children, maintain standards for age-appropriate content, and deter offensive material.

Honourable Nartey George underlined the necessity for the platform to develop into a useful resource for education and skill improvement, going beyond simple amusement.

Inquiring as to how it operates, the Hon. Minister also discussed the Ghanaian algorithm structure.

The introduction of the STEM feed excited Hon. Samuel Nartey George.

“We will work with you to see how to drive content on the One Million Coders Program to help Ghanaians use the app to learn and also pick classes,” he stated.

In order to help optimize the financial potential of content creators, the Minister also stressed the necessity of providing bloggers with boot camp training.

He emphasized the importance of controlling hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation, and he said TikTok should think about forming a content review staff dedicated to protecting people’s rights.
