Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been instructed to disqualify candidates who would violate the party’s internal election regulations.

Before formally announcing the opening of nominations for its internal elections, the Party accused its members of “denying” candidates who would run public campaigns.

NPP General Secretary Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong told delegates at the Party’s National Delegates Conference in Accra that the Party’s members have to respect the NPP’s authority and structures.

According to him, party officers need to realize that the interests of the party should never take precedence over those of an individual.

“Until we officially open nominations for aspirants, let’s continue to deny people from coming to our constituencies.” Mr. Kodua said.

“We are a disciplined Party and anyone who wants to lead the Party must exhibit discipline,” he reiterated.

Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, was criticized by Mr. Kodua for ignoring the Party’s decision to abstain from the rerun of 19 polling places in order to end the impasse in the 2024 parliamentary results.

He claimed that the NPP had “good reasons” for boycotting the replay.

According to Mr. Kodua, the NPP would utilize the conference as a means of regaining control in 2028.

To vote on suggested changes to the party’s constitution, more than 5,500 delegates are in Accra for the conference.

Key reforms, such as the possible elimination of the Special Electoral College system, which is used to choose the party’s presidential candidate, are among the topics of discussion during the conference.

To improve the party’s base, further suggestions include creating Electoral Area Committees and reorganizing Constituency and Regional Executive Committees.

With the theme “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” the event aims to foster harmony and togetherness within the party and collaborate to retake power in 2028.
