On August 5, President John Dramani Mahama will hold a high-level Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra with the goal of pushing Africa-led health reforms and changing global health governance.
In order to support ambitious new plans for health independence and structural transformation, African heads of state, international health leaders, and development partners will gather at the summit, which has as its theme “African Health Sovereignty in a Reimagined Global Health Governance Architecture.”
The conference will formally launch The Accra Initiative, an action-driven framework created to match African goals with global health governance, according to a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Important results are anticipated to include:
The establishment of a Presidential High-Level Panel to design a new roadmap for global health governance reform.
The launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative, promoting investment-driven, country-led health systems supported by domestic resources and strategic partnerships.
Adoption of the Accra Compact, a shared African vision for health sovereignty and a fairer global health order.
Citing antiquated international health systems that no longer adequately represent Africa’s demographic and economic realities, President Mahama underlined the urgent need for reform.
He said, “Africa must take charge of its health destiny, not in isolation, but through determined, coordinated action… reshaping the rules that govern global health, rules that must reflect the voices and realities of our people.”
