The Ghana Domain Name Registry (GDNR) Governing Board was established by Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.
The board’s mandate is to lead revolutionary changes in the registry’s administration and regain complete control over Ghana’s country code top-level domain (.gh).
The Minister expressed concern that the.gh domain has been managed by the private sector for years and underlined the need to restore national sovereignty over Ghana’s digital identity assets during the swearing-in event in Accra.

That is a national security risk. It is unacceptable for a sovereign digital identity asset to be operated privately,” He stated.
He revealed that his top objective when he took government was to end the eight-year-old dispute over domain control.
Under his direction, the Ministry, in collaboration with the GDNR, has started the financial and technical procedures necessary to transfer the.gh domain from Ghana.com, a private operator, to complete government control.
He urged the newly appointed Board to show strong leadership in defending Ghana’s share of the continent’s remaining IPv4 and IPv6 resources.
He assigned the Board the following duties in describing the strategic and commercial potential of the .gh domain:
• Promote national digital identity by encouraging the use of .com.gh among businesses.
• Streamline and fully digitise the domain registration process.
• Propose legislative reforms mandating .gh registration as part of company incorporation or renewal.
• Enforce compliance across all public sector agencies.
• Explore revenue-generation models to sustain GDNR operations.
This Board has the opportunity to leave a legacy. Let’s make .gh a symbol of national pride and digital sovereignty,” he charged.
The Minister also emphasized the necessity of international credibility and public trust in Ghana’s domain governance, emphasizing that the reforms must be inclusive, transparent, and technically sound.
