Ya Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, expelled John Abdulai Jinapor, the Energy Minister, and his staff from the palace.
The Minister and his delegation went to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, but the regent declined to receive them. As of the time of writing, neither the Gbewaa Palace nor the Energy Ministry has released an official comment.
In what has been characterized as a forceful message from the Dagbon traditional authority, the minister was turned away from the palace while in the Northern Region to address growing tensions over the Northern Electricity Distribution Company’s (NEDCo) decision to suspend operations.
On social media, videos of the incident have subsequently gone viral.
The Ya Naa voiced their strong disapproval of the continuous power failures and instability that have left many parts of Tamale and the neighboring areas in the dark for weeks, according to palace sources.
According to reports, the overlord made it clear that he would not accept any conversations or courtesy until the impacted areas’ electrical supply was completely restored.
The Palace refused to give the Minister an audience while Tamale sat in darkness, and this was made quite clear to him. According to a palace source, Dagbon deserves better.
