On Wednesday, February 5, Mr. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, an Independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North, made a complete contribution to parliamentary proceedings in the Asante Twi language, marking a historic event in Ghana’s parliament.

Speaking in Twi, Mr. Frimpong, who currently supports the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus, emphasized the importance of enhancing the nation’s road system in order to increase domestic travel.

His remarks backed up a statement made by a colleague on the House floor about tourism.

Additionally, Mr. Frimpong alerted the House to reported prostitution in his constituency and ineffective lamps on the highways.

However, Mr. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Second Deputy Speaker who oversaw the proceedings, later forced him to translate his remarks into English.

An MP may use any of the local languages, subject to interpretation and translation to ensure everyone understands, in accordance with Order 63 of the revised Standing Orders of the House.

It was anticipated that this clause will become operative during the Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 8th Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, declared in 2024 that the equipment and translators needed to support the use of regional languages in Parliament were being installed.

According to Mr. Bagbin, “So, barring any hitches, the new measure will take off after the Easter break,”

By encouraging variety and inclusivity in Ghana’s legislative processes, Mr. Frimpong’s audacious action has raised interest in the use of regional languages in the parliament.
