In the recently concluded 2023 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Tyrone Marhguy, the Rastafarian boy who was turned away from Achimota School because of his dreadlocks, performed exceptionally well.

In the 2023 exam, the science student at Achimota School received eight As.

In 2021, Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea, a fellow Rastafarian student who similarly encountered early rejection, made headlines and sparked a national conversation about individual rights and religious freedom.

The court ordered Achimota School to admit both Rastafarian students, stressing the protection of their fundamental human rights, following weeks of uncertainty and a legal battle that went all the way to the Human Rights Court.

After the settlement, Marhguy was able to join the school’s squad and compete in the 2023 National Science and Math Quiz in addition to being admitted into Achimota School.
