Finance Minister and outgoing Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has commissioned the newly constructed Butler Barracks and Offices Complex at Burma Camp, in a major boost to military infrastructure and the welfare of personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The newly completed facility provides modern accommodation, administrative offices and training facilities for key units of the Ghana Armed Forces, including the GAF Central Band, Central Ordnance Depot (COD) and School of Ordnance.
Government Highlights Commitment to Ghana Armed Forces
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr Ato Forson said the project demonstrated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare, working conditions and operational effectiveness of Ghana Armed Forces personnel.
The Acting Defence Minister commended the Military High Command and Ministry of Defence for their professionalism and dedication in completing the project.
He said the modern facilities would contribute to improved operational efficiency while providing military personnel with better living and working conditions.
Dr Ato Forson also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing other major military infrastructure projects, including the Afari Military Hospital.
He said the government would continue to pursue sustainable approaches to the development and modernisation of military infrastructure across Ghana.
Butler Barracks Described as Historic Military Project
The Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, described the commissioning of Butler Barracks as a significant milestone for the Ghana Armed Forces.
He said the facility compares favourably with modern military installations operated by armed forces in other parts of the world.
Air Vice Marshal Mensah-Larkai stressed that military readiness begins with proper accommodation and working conditions, noting that barracks play a broader role than simply providing accommodation.
According to him, military barracks are environments where discipline, leadership, teamwork and comradeship are developed and strengthened.
Modern Facilities Relocate GAF Units
Presenting details of the project, the Director of Engineer Services (DES), Brigadier General Jonas Wiafe, explained that the development was designed to relocate several Ghana Armed Forces units from their previous locations along the El-Wak–37 corridor.
The project provides purpose-built facilities for the Armed Forces Central Band, Central Ordnance Depot Headquarters and School of Ordnance.
The new infrastructure is expected to provide a more suitable environment for training, administration and the operations of the beneficiary units.
Brigadier General Wiafe urged all beneficiaries to ensure that the facilities are properly maintained to protect the government’s investment and extend the lifespan of the infrastructure.
He also expressed appreciation to Unique Development Limited, the project engineers and other stakeholders whose contributions helped bring the Butler Barracks project to completion.
The commissioning forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s military infrastructure, improve personnel welfare and enhance the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.
