Baba Ali Yussif is the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) official candidate for the important by-election that is set for Tuesday, March 3, 2026, and the party has officially begun its campaign to win the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat.

General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong made the news in a press statement on Monday, February 9, 2026, after what the party called a process of reaching a consensus in order to present a unified front.

In order to choose a candidate who could effectively compete in the historically NDC-leaning constituency, the National Executive Committee (NEC) established a Candidate Search Committee, which was chaired by former General Secretary John Boadu. This committee produced Baba Ali Yussif, who is currently the party’s Constituency Secretary.

During an extended Constituency Executive Committee meeting and Delegates Conference on Sunday, February 8, 2026, he was greeted with applause.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is dealing with internal strife in the same constituency, which coincides with the NPP’s hasty endorsement of a single candidate.

The NDC is facing accusations of bribery and vote-buying, while the NPP has united around a single candidate.

Justin Kodua Frimpong urged party members to set aside disagreements and focus on the March 3 elections in his statement.

The party maintains that it sees the by-election as an opportunity to provide greater representation to a constituency that has recently been at the center of political interest, in addition to a struggle for a parliamentary seat.

The statement said, “Therefore, the Party urges all NPP members, supporters, and sympathisers to unite firmly behind Baba Ali Yussif, who represents the Party’s best chance to win… to help restore hope, effective representation, and prosperity to the Constituency.”

The focus now shifts to whether the NPP’s campaign can overcome the NDC’s established hold on the Ayawaso East seat as the Electoral Commission gets ready for the poll on March 3.
