The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has urged businesses, institutions, and organised groups to adopt and maintain the open spaces surrounding the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange as part of a landscape beautification initiative aimed at improving the city’s aesthetics and promoting environmental responsibility.
The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, made the call on Monday while on a working visit to Abossey Okai with the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, where they engaged traders and businesses on measures to strengthen the area’s organisation, lower prices, and improve the outlook of key commercial corridors.
The Mayor stated that the Assembly was proposing a collaborative agreement that would allow corporations and institutions to take ownership of specified open spaces, develop them into attractive green areas, and maintain routine maintenance to support a cleaner and more resilient city.
He explained that the adoption campaign was intended to inspire shared responsibility for the preservation of public places while also improving community wellness by creating and maintaining greener, more well-kept landscapes.
Hon. Allotey suggested that, in addition to beautification, the designated sites could be used for public education and awareness initiatives, such as environmental protection and climate change mitigation.
He added that the strategy was anticipated to inspire sustained dedication and bolster civic pride and that the Assembly will honour participating companies by designating adopted locations after them.
The Mayor stated that organisations that join would carry out tasks including planting and caring for gardens, putting in landscaping, and assisting with recurring cleanup efforts in their designated regions.
The Kwame Nkrumah Triangle and SSNIT Roundabout at Circle, as well as the ECG Makola Triangle, Highways Triangle, Fan Milk Roundabout, Awudome Roundabout, Avenor Triangle, St. Mary’s Triangle, Cocoa Clinic Roundabout, and the Cocobod median, among other chosen road shoulders, were among the other sites designated under the program, he said, although Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange was a priority location for immediate adoption.
In order to guarantee that the adopted places were appropriately developed and maintained, the Mayor promised that the Assembly will continue to be open to negotiations with interested parties to reach an agreement on the scope of work, standards, and coordination procedures.
