The Cedi was trading at 11.6292 to the dollar on Monday, July 27, according to the Bank of Ghana’s rate.

At 11.6408 to a dollar, it was sold.

At 15.5180, the pound was purchasing, and it sold at 15.5347.

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, recently stated that the cedi experienced demand challenges in May but has subsequently rebounded in the interbank market.

According to him, the cedi lost 9.5% of its value in relation to the US dollar during the year ending July 17, 2026.

He was speaking at the 131st Monetary Policy Committee Press Conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 22.

Dr Asiama further stated that the average lending rate in the banking sector has dropped from 27.0% to 15.6%.

In response to lower credit costs and higher demand, he said private sector credit increased by 41.2 percent in June 2026, compared to 8.6 percent in June 2025.

He stated that “the banking sector recorded robust performance in June 2026, with strong asset growth, improved solvency, and enhanced asset quality.”

He pointed out that on a cash basis, the first quarter’s fiscal performance generally showed significant spending control in the face of income shortfalls, leading to better-than-expected balances.

He noted that despite a significant increase in the import bill brought on by higher energy and related expenditures related to the Middle East war, the external sector performed well in the first half of 2026, supported by solid export revenues.

“In the interbank market, the cedi came under demand pressures in May but has since recovered. In the year to 17 July 2026, the cedi cumulatively depreciated by 9.5 percent against the US dollar,” he reiterated.
