The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have warned both individuals and organizations that use military-style clothing and accessories without permission.
This warning follows multiple incidents in which demonstrators, private security guards, and galamsey operators have donned military gear in spite of constant awareness campaigns and advisories.
Some protesters and others claiming to offer private security to dignitaries were seen wearing military-pattern camouflage suits and other military-style gear during recent rallies in Accra and Kumasi.
Similar incidents were noted during GAF anti-galamsey operations.
The GAF has dealt with this matter previously.
The GAF issued a warning to the public in 2023 on the illicit use of uniforms and accessories with military patterns. The warning referenced National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which forbids the use of military gear without authorization.
Misuse of military gear can lead to criminal activity and impersonation, which is extremely dangerous for public safety.
The GAF stresses in a statement that these acts run the risk of giving the mistaken impression that these people are a member of the armed forces, damaging the organization’s credibility.
Given the potential security risks, GAF will act swiftly, which may involve apprehending those who break these rules and prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law.
Any suspicious activity involving unapproved military clothing is encouraged to be reported by the public.
