The Ghana banking sector recorded GH¢7.1 billion in profit at the end of June 2026, slightly below the GH¢7.2 billion recorded during the same period in 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The latest figures contained in the Bank of Ghana’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report indicate a slowdown in bank profitability and income growth across the financial sector.

Banking Industry Profit Growth Turns Negative

The banking industry’s profit after tax growth contracted by 1.3% year-on-year in June 2026, compared with a strong 32.6% growth recorded in June 2025.

Similarly, profit before tax (PBT) declined by 1.5% year-on-year during the review period. This represents a significant change from the 32.2% growth recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

The figures point to a moderation in banking sector profitability in Ghana, despite the industry maintaining a relatively strong overall profit position.

Bank Income Growth Slows

The Bank of Ghana report also showed that growth across most major income streams slowed in June 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Fees and commissions income was the major exception, recording a higher growth rate during the review period.

The slower expansion in key income lines contributed to the weaker overall profit performance of Ghana’s banking industry.

Return on Equity and Assets Decline

The profitability indicators of banks also weakened during the period under review.

The Return on Equity (ROE) for Ghana’s banking industry declined to 22.9% in June 2026, compared with 32.2% recorded in June 2025.

Meanwhile, Return on Assets (ROA) fell from 5.6% in June 2025 to 4.4% in June 2026.

The decline in ROE and ROA reflects the moderation in banking sector profitability and highlights changing financial performance trends within Ghana’s banking industry.

Overall, the latest Bank of Ghana banking sector report shows that while banks remain profitable, the pace of profit growth has slowed significantly compared with the previous year.
