President John Dramani Mahama has warned the current generation to manage the wealth of resources it has now wisely or face the wrath of future generations.

President Mahama claims that bad decisions made in recent years have hampered the nation’s possibilities and left it reeling from significant difficulties; this scenario requires attention.

“Our story cannot be one of missed opportunities. It must be one of continued efforts to achieve far more than we can boast of now. Posterity will not accept our failure or take them kindly,” the President said.

During his speech at the Jubilee House, Accra’s seat of government, yesterday for the 68th Independence Day commemoration celebration, President Mahama made this call.

President Mahama stated that rather than depressing citizens, the harsh reality of stagnation should motivate them to work for swift development.

“For if our forebears, armed with far less, did not permit their backs to be broken by the repressive and exploitative colonial administration representing imperial power, how can we, their progenies, armed with far more, despair in the face of these challenges?” he said.

Every anniversary of independence should be an occasion to reflect on the legacy being created for the next generation, he said, rather than always lamenting the shortcomings of the recent past.

According to him, the current generation is only responsible for protecting the nation’s resources for future generations and making sure they are used wisely.

He said that, in his capacity as president, he was dedicated to offering the fearless leadership and unclouded vision required to safely navigate the current economic turbulence while securing the future.

He pointed out that the narrative of Ghana’s independence, which was marked by loans, donor assistance, and IMF bailouts, undermined the goal of the nation’s achieved freedom.

Instead of sticking to a term like “a country beyond aid,” President Mahama stated that this cliché needed to be broken by actions that would break the chain of dependency.

“This is a defining moment but policies alone, no matter how well couched or intentioned, will not change our reality. Action will change that reality.”

“Young Ghanaians must step up to the plate, seize those opportunities and contribute to building a self-sufficient nation. Ghana’s economic future is in your hands,” he said.

President Mahama listed a number of measures his administration planned to implement in order to free people from the bonds of dependency.

Among the initiatives are investments in infrastructure, agriculture, and the renowned 24-hour economic project.

He inspired the populace to support the government in implementing the necessary economic changes that would establish the foundation for long-term, sustainable growth and development.
