Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana are now earning approximately GH¢60,000 per month as basic salary, representing a significant increase from their previous monthly pay, following the implementation of a revised salary structure for public officials.
The development has renewed discussions about MP salaries in Ghana, public sector compensation and government expenditure, particularly amid concerns over rising costs associated with political office holders.
JoyNews Research and Data Analyst Caleb Ziblim disclosed the figure on Saturday, August 30, 2026, in a video shared on X while discussing the substantial increase in compensation costs linked to the Presidency.
According to Ziblim, Members of Parliament were earning approximately GH¢30,000 per month before the latest salary adjustment. Under the new pay structure, which took effect from 2025, their basic monthly salary has increased to about GH¢60,000.
He explained that the GH¢60,000 amount represents the basic salary of an MP and does not include the various allowances and other benefits that lawmakers may be entitled to receive in the course of their official duties.
The increase in parliamentary salaries forms part of a broader revision of the remuneration structure for Ghanaian public officials, resulting in higher compensation costs for political office holders.
Ziblim also connected the increase in salaries to a sharp rise in the total compensation bill associated with the Presidency.
According to the data analyst, expenditure on presidential compensation increased from approximately GH¢100 million to GH¢248 million, despite the current government reducing the number of political appointees.
The figures are likely to fuel further public debate over government spending, political salaries, public sector remuneration and the cost of running government in Ghana.
The increase also comes at a time when discussions surrounding fiscal discipline, public expenditure and the efficient use of state resources remain important issues in Ghana’s economic and political landscape.
