Ghana joined other African countries in celebrating the 63rd African Union (AU) Day on Monday, May 25, 2026. The celebration called for unity, practical integration, and a renewed sense of optimism for the future of the continent.
The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, spoke at a flag-raising ceremony at the State House in Accra. He described the event as a celebration of Africa’s common heritage as well as a reminder of the work still to be done to achieve unity, dignity, prosperity, and self-determination.
Hon. Quayson remarked on the Organization of African Unity’s (OAU) historic founding in Addis Ababa sixty-three years ago, pointing out that it was motivated by a vision of a continent free from colonialism and united in a shared goal.

He cited Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President+, as a key proponent of that idea, citing his conviction that Ghana’s independence could only be meaningful if it was linked to the liberation of the entire continent.
The deputy minister underlined that the African Union’s core values—unity, solidarity, peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty, democratic governance, human dignity, and sustainable development—remain essential to the continent’s advancement.
He pointed out that economic inequality, young unemployment, climate vulnerability, global marginalisation, conflicts, and unfair trade systems are just a few of the major issues that Africa still faces.
He says that rather than isolating African governments, these problems call for cooperation and group action.
Under President John Dramani Mahama, he reiterated Ghana’s dedication to furthering the African unity agenda.
He mentioned initiatives within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the AU framework to advance free mobility, bolster economic cooperation, and drive people-centered diplomacy.
Additionally, he exhorted Africans to maintain their optimism and take advantage of the continent’s advantages, such as its young population, rich cultural legacy, abundant natural resources, and inventiveness.
