Ghana’s government has begun negotiations with the family of Guinea’s first President, Ahmed Sékou Touré, to acquire possession of the mansion where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah resided and worked during his final years as Guinea’s Co-President.

President John Dramani Mahama ordered the action, which aims to preserve Ghana’s first President’s legacy while also developing the home into a heritage site for historical preservation and tourism.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that the Mahama administration plans to preserve and renovate the residence as a tribute to Dr. Nkrumah and to create a comprehensive experience that traces his life and leadership journey from Ghana to Guinea.

Mr. Ablakwa claims that on Saturday, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang led a Ghanaian delegation to visit the S Déou Touré family and take a tour of Dr. Nkrumah’s abandoned home in Guinea, formally informing them of the decision.

The visit came after Mamady Doumbouya, the president of Guinea, was sworn in.

“The Mahama Administration intends to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea residence not only as an act of respect but also to preserve the Osagyefo’s legacy and create a full experience for tourists to follow Nkrumah’s outstanding life from Ghana to Guinea,” part of his post stated.

Mr. Ablakwa stated that while hiring preservation specialists to direct the refurbishment and conservation process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is presently discussing the terms and conditions of the proposed takeover.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is negotiating the terms and conditions and engaging preservation experts for this important assignment. In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the Ghanaian public shall be fully apprised at every stage.”

In keeping with its pledge to accountability and transparency, he promised that the administration will keep the Ghanaian people fully informed at every stage. A pivotal moment in Pan-African history occurred when Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, was appointed co-president by President Sékou Touré while residing in Guinea following his ouster in 1966.
