The Ghanaian government has responded to the growing Israeli-Iranian confrontation by announcing measures to evacuate its citizens from Iran.

On Monday, June 16, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision on social media, stating that the decision was primarily made to protect Ghanaian lives.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa emphasised.

He also disclosed that, in order to ensure the security of diplomatic personnel, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran had been shut down immediately.

The evacuation will take place across Iran’s land borders and will involve all Ghanaians living there, including professionals, students, diplomats, and other citizens.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the government is dedicated to making sure that every Ghanaian, wherever they may be, is safe.

The government is keeping a careful eye on events in Israel and will offer guidance when the time is right, he added.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he added.

The Minister urged both countries to put a halt to hostilities and give priority to a peaceful resolution, restating Ghana’s call for diplomacy.
