Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a waste management behemoth, has refuted allegations that the government abruptly ended its contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
The business made it clear that, following a planned extension, the arrangement concluded organically in September 2024.
Zoomlion clarified in a statement in response to a June 11, 2025, message from the Office of the President that the deal, which was a component of the nationwide Street Sweeping Program, was extended for an extra six months after it was initially scheduled to expire in March 2024.
“The contract has therefore reached its natural conclusion and expired,” the company clarified.
“Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation of the agreement by the government, and that is not what the Office of the President stated.”
Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni filed a petition, to which the Presidency responded with the letter.
According to the statement, the government decided to implement competitive tendering for future sanitation agreements rather than renew the contract.
The letter also promised changes to improve working conditions for sanitation workers and revealed plans to audit all payments made to Zoomlion once the contract ended.
Zoomlion has applauded these advancements and stated its support for the government’s initiatives to guarantee value for money and improve transparency.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited confirmed that it “welcomes and fully supports this approach.”
Additionally, it stated that it was prepared to participate in any upcoming bidding procedures and mentioned that the initial YEA contract had been won through competitive procurement in 2019.
“We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes.”
Regarding responsibility, the company praised the audit initiative and reaffirmed its dedication to moral behavior.
“As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations,” Zoomlion stated.
It reaffirmed its support for sanitation workers and backed initiatives to increase their pay.
Zoomlion stated that it is “deeply committed to ensuring dignified and sustainable livelihoods for sanitation workers across the country.”
The company also stated that its other active contracts with YEA and other state agencies are unaffected by the President’s decree.
