Beginning on July 1, 2024, the National Health Insurance Authority of Ghana intends to introduce the Visitor Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS) for international nationals.
Under the new plan, non-resident visitors to Ghana who stay for less than six months a year must enroll in a health insurance plan that would cover them while they are there.
Depending on how long they plan to stay in Ghana, the regulation applies to travelers who enter the country through airports with a valid visa or with a visa upon arrival.
In instance, the then-health minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu introduced the visitor insurance program in February, stating that it “scheme will be the main vehicle for the delivery of robust healthcare services to non-residents who will be travelling to Ghana.”
ECOWAS member country nationals are currently not eligible, nevertheless. According to the administration, plans are being developed to include them in the program at a later date.
The National Health Insurance Scheme is now free for Ghanaians, but it’s unclear if or how much would be charged to foreigners if the government were to market a comparable program.
The Minister clarified that it was merely a suggestion by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and not a government policy in a news release dated Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
