The sale of four Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, is the subject of a protest being led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa today, Tuesday, June 18.
The president is supposed to be pressured into stopping the sale of these hotels, according to the NDC MP.
He reaffirmed that all preparations for the demonstration are finished at a press conference held at the press center on Monday, June 17.
He underlined that he was hoping for a nonviolent demonstration and gave his word that the Ghana Police Service will deal with anyone trying to cause trouble.
Additionally, Mr. Ablakwa stated that he expected presidential delegates to meet with the protestors and accept their petition for submission to the president. During the news conference, the former Deputy Education Minister emphasized the urgency and significance of their cause while restating the necessity of the demonstration in preventing the sale from going forward.
The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has already received a request for an investigation into the transaction from Mr. Ablakwa.
He claimed, nonetheless, that he is forced to take this extra step because, in spite of popular opposition, information he has received suggests that the deal’s finalization process is still in progress.
Mr. Ablakwa voiced fear that the deal would close before the Commission wraps up its probe, citing CHRAJ’s reputation for conducting exhaustive investigations.
Consequently, he feels that further pressure should be applied to SSNIT in order to stop the transaction.
