The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have assured passengers that the current approved public transport fares remain unchanged while consultations on a possible fare adjustment continue.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the two transport groups clarified that no final decision has been made to increase transport fares in Ghana, despite an earlier proposal submitted to the Ministry of Transport seeking an upward review.
The GPRTU and GRTCC began discussions with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday as part of the ongoing review of the country’s 2026 public transport fare window.
Following the meeting, a joint technical team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC has been established to assess the various transport operating costs and fare inputs before any final decision is reached.
The transport unions explained that the review is intended to ensure that any potential adjustment to public transport fares is fair and considers the interests of both transport operators and passengers.
They added that the outcome of the consultations will be officially communicated to the public once the transport fare review process has been completed.
In the meantime, the GPRTU and GRTCC have directed their members, including drivers, station masters and transport owners, to continue charging the existing approved fares across Ghana until further notice.
Passengers have therefore been advised not to pay any unofficial or newly announced fares while the consultations are ongoing.
The two transport organisations also appealed to passengers, drivers and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as discussions on the 2026 Ghana transport fares continue.
