A High-Level Delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Commission) is going on a promotion mission in the Republic of Ghana from September 29 to October 2, 2025, in accordance with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter).
The purpose of the mission is to engage relevant institutions and obtain information about the implementation of the African Charter’s provisions and its protocols in order to help the country as a State Party comply with the Charter.
The High-Level delegation paid the Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP), Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, a courtesy call to update him on the Commission’s work and their mission in Ghana, which is to promote the Charter, establish collaboration and accountability mechanisms, and hold productive dialogue with specific sectors to determine the current situation regarding the Charter’s implementation in Ghana.

The delegation pointed out that Ghana has not been the focus of unfavourable coverage regarding the problem of torture and praised the country for its position as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues.
In his remarks, Hon. Gyakye Quayson (MP) praised the Commission for its efforts to advance human rights on the continent and pledged Ghana’s participation both during and after the promotion mission, including exchanging best practices with other State Parties.
The delegation is made up of Hon. Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, the Chairperson of the Committee on Prevention of Torture in Africa; Hon. Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso, the Chairperson of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment, and Human Rights Violations; Hon. Commissioner Mudford Zachariah Mwandenga, the Chairperson of the Working Group on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights; Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, the Vice Chairperson of the Commission and the Country Rapporteur for the human rights situation in the Republic of Ghana and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa.
