Ghana’s two-term presidential limit has been reiterated by President John Dramani Mahama, who has also stated that he will not run for office in 2028.

His withdrawal from the contest, according to a statement from the Presidency, would bolster his determination to implement fiscal restraint and prevent the pattern of election-year expenditure that has historically led to economic disasters.

Speaking on a three-day state visit to Singapore, where he met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam of Singapore in a bilateral meeting, Mr. Mahama denounced the practice of incumbent governments circumventing fiscal safeguards in order to gain support from voters.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections, and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” the President assured.

He listed the main economic benefits of his administration since he came back to power following a resounding victory in the 2024 election, pointing to a sharp increase in the value of the cedi and a sharp drop in interest rates and inflation.

Following repeated assertions by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he plans to run for a third term beyond his present and final mandate, Mr. Mahama made these remarks.

Enhancing economic relations and luring investment between the two countries were the main topics of the talks in Singapore.
