The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is preparing to commit up to US$150 million to projects aimed at developing Ghana’s Volta corridor and improving regional trade and transport infrastructure.
The proposed financing includes a US$100 million investment and an additional US$50 million initiative focused on strengthening the connection between rail infrastructure and the Volta River.
The projects are expected to improve Ghana’s transportation network and create stronger trade links with Burkina Faso and other Sahelian markets, potentially opening new opportunities for the movement of goods across the region.
IFC Targets Ghana’s Transport Infrastructure
IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop disclosed the planned investments on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to Diop, discussions with President John Dramani Mahama focused on addressing a key gap in Ghana’s transportation infrastructure that could facilitate the movement of goods northwards through the Volta corridor.
The proposed investment forms part of broader efforts to improve Ghana’s logistics infrastructure, enhance regional connectivity and attract private-sector financing into strategic development projects.
Boost for Ghana-Burkina Faso Trade
Improved rail and river connectivity could strengthen Ghana’s position as a major trade and logistics gateway to Burkina Faso and landlocked countries in the Sahel.
The planned IFC funding could also support wider economic activity by improving transportation links for businesses involved in agriculture, manufacturing, industrial production and international trade.
The announcement comes as the Ghanaian government seeks to mobilise more private capital for infrastructure development, with transport connectivity identified as an important component of the country’s economic growth strategy.
If implemented, the Volta corridor projects could contribute to lower logistics barriers, improve the movement of goods and strengthen Ghana’s role in regional trade across West Africa.
