President John Dramani Mahama has announced government plans to rehabilitate the Pwalugu Tomato Factory in Ghana’s Upper East Region as part of efforts to boost tomato production, agriculture and agro-processing.

The President said the refurbished factory would become a major processing hub for tomatoes cultivated under a planned expansion of tomato farming in the Upper East Region.

Speaking at a citizens’ engagement in Navrongo on Friday, August 14, 2026, President Mahama explained that the government’s proposed investment under the New Economy programme would position agriculture and agro-processing at the heart of Ghana’s economic development strategy.

The planned rehabilitation of the Pwalugu Tomato Factory is expected to support local tomato farmers, create jobs, promote value addition and reduce post-harvest losses while strengthening Ghana’s agro-processing industry.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to increase agricultural production, expand local manufacturing and create new economic opportunities through investment in Ghana’s agriculture and agro-processing sector.
