The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primary was won by former president John Dramani Mahama.
98.9% of the total votes went to him. Following his resounding victory in the party’s presidential primary on Saturday, Mr. Mahama will be the incumbent in the 2024 general elections.
In the general elections of 2016 and 2020, Mr. John Mahama was unsuccessful in winning the president. But in the NDC’s primary elections on Saturday, May 13, he received 297,603 (98.9%) of the total valid votes polled.
3,181 (1.1%) votes were cast for his rival Kojo Bonsu. The results were announced in the early hours of Sunday, May 14 by the returning officer for the Electoral Commission.
The former president competed against Kojo Bonsu, a former mayor of Kumasi, and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a former governor of the Bank of Ghana.
However, Dr. Duffuor pulled out of the campaign after alleging irregularities with the party’s election roll. Prior to the primaries, Mahama’s campaign staff had expressed confidence in collecting 99.9% of the votes.
Beatrice Annan, the team’s deputy spokeswoman, stated that the team’s belief in a landslide victory in the flagbearership contest has been enhanced and solidified by the enthusiastic reception they received in each of the 275 constituencies they toured prior to the primaries.
Earlier, Kojo Bonsu congratulated John Dramani Mahama on his overwhelming victory in the primaries. The former mayor of Kumasi revealed in a Facebook post that he had called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him on his triumph.
