John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, has reiterated the party’s dedication to developing Ghana’s creative sector.
Mahama promised to build a new national theater in Kumasi to assist local content producers in the event that the NDC wins the 2024 elections during a meeting with creatives in Kumasi on Tuesday, November.
This plan expands on the former president’s pledge in the NDC’s 2020 manifesto to rehabilitate Accra’s National Theatre, which aims to upgrade the building with cutting-edge equipment to better serve the public and the arts community.
Mahama stressed that this pledge is still in place and will be carried out by the incoming NDC administration.
Mahama voiced his worry about the National Theatre’s decline in Accra, saying,
“Since the Chinese helped us to build it during Rawlings’s time, the theatre has not been rehabilitated. The curtains don’t draw properly, and the stage is in poor condition.
It’s time we rehabilitate this building to fully support the creative industry.”
“We have not abandoned our promise,” he said, reaffirming the NDC’s dedication to building Ghana’s second national theater in Kumasi. We will construct a second theater in Kumasi if we win power.
Better locations for artists and performers would be provided by renovating Accra’s National Theatre and constructing a new building in Kumasi, opening up new opportunities for Ghana’s cultural exchange and economic growth.
